Cooke City is the western gateway to "America's most spectacular drive", The Beartooth Highway. This spectacular highway climbs through alpine scenery to an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. The highway runs between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana and is only open during the summer months. Cooke City, Montana is the northeastern gateway community to Yellowstone. The road is open year-round from Mammoth Hot Springs inside the park to the high alpine community of Cooke City.  Known for its black diamond snowmobiling, Cooke City is both a winter and summer paradise. In summer, the surrounding Beartooth Mountains provide excellent opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
