Cody is the eastern gateway
community to Yellowstone National Park. Although located approximately 80
miles outside the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Cody is still a
popular destination for park visitors.
This small yet vibrant western community offers the Yellowstone visitor a
wide variety of enjoyments from which to choose. Here you'll be able to
spend a day at the Buffalo Bill Museum, watch the famous nightly rodeo, go fly
fishing on any of the area's numerous blue ribbon trout streams, or browse
through the western gift shops. If you're planning to experience the
western cowboy lifestyle, then Cody is the place for you!
The Seasons of Cody:
Summer:
Although
Cody is a great place to visit any time of the year, summer is the busiest
season as it parallels the opening of Yellowstone Park about May 1 each year.
Even at its busiest, however, plentiful accommodations and services as well as
good ol' western hospitality make a for a very relaxing summer visit at Cody.
Fall:
With
the aspens in the Shoshone National Forest literally blazing in the fall, many
prefer traveling in the "autumn shoulder season." Fewer visitors are
in the area, but Yellowstone Park remains open through the first of November.
Typically, the weather remains mild, even though an occasional early snow may
temporarily hinder travel. For years, hunters from throughout the United States
and the world have descended on Cody in the fall to hunt the variety of big game
with their families staying on in Cody to enjoy galleries, shopping, dining,
local parks, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, and of course, just plain
relaxing.
Winter:
For
an affordable winter vacation, Cody Country is the place to be. It is a
hub-of-access to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and
wildlife-watching, not to mention the Buffalo Bill Historical Center which is
now open in the winter, November-March, Tuesday - Sunday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Snowmobilers can trailer their machines from Cody to the
Beartooth Mountains and Cooke City, Montana
northwest of Cody, the Big Horn Mountains to the east, and Yellowstone National
Park to the west. There is a $15 registration fee for out-of-state snowmobiles
which can be purchased from most dealers upon arrival in the state.
In addition to the more common winter acitivities, world-class
ice climbing opportunities run from November through April with average
temperatures from 5 to 20 degrees. Winter in Yellowstone
offers a unique vacation filled with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
snowmobiling and scenic/wildlife touring through steaming snowscapes.
Spring:
Even
before Yellowstone opens for the season about May 1, spring is a quiet,
unhurried time to visit the Cody Country and enjoy galleries, shopping, and
dining. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is always a must see, and the
"off season" gives the visitor lots of time for a leisurely visit at
each exhibit.
